They tend to favour diesels now which is why Volvo police cars are less common in the UK than they were as the petrol engines aren't economical enough and the diesels aren't powerful enough. Now many traffic cars in the UK are BMW 3/530ds and increasingly Audi A4/A6 3.0Litres. Still see a lot of Volvos though.
