DVLA has this as a Morris The vehicle details for RNT 996H are: Date of First Registration 01 01 1970 Cylinder Capacity 998CC It ceased being licenced just as the TV series was shot (September 1988). It was beige in colour so I guess it was resprayed for the series. Edit: Vehicle Description ammended, was Austin Mini. -- Last edit: 2006-04-18 14:03:14 |

This should probably be 3 stars, since it is only used in the first episode? |
◊ 2006-12-14 21:45 |
Yes, except if it was used a lot in that episode (I do not remember...) |

It seems the body ( without the cutouts on lower front corners ) and the rear view mirror are from a pre-1965 MkI. The front grille is from a MkII Morris Mini. -- Last edit: 2007-04-15 23:09:11 |

Spoiler He crashes it, out of site at the end. We only heard the sounds, & see a wheel bounce into view. The Regal Van nearly gets caught up! |

1969 was last MY with Morris Minor 1000. |

Confirmed as Mk2 - grille, external door hinges (most shots, but not clear in latest thumb), drop-down hinged rear number plate mount, sliding windows. Mk2 production ended Sept 69 ahead of Mk3 introduction. |

Sadly we seem to have lost some pictures from earlier comments which might have helped with the Mk1 Austin claims. I agree the rounded bonnet and matched grille panel look Mk1 with a Mk2 grille bodged into place; Mk2 bonnet and grille profile where they meet was straighter and should not show body metal behind. And this comment seems now fairly significant So I can go with the Mk1 idea, but we're not out of the woods yet - still some issues: - the bumper is either 1959-62 Mk1 before 63-67 handlebars or Mk2 - the plate info says 998cc; if accurate and original, the only 998cc Mk1 was the plain Cooper from early 64 (which had handlebar bumpers); the 62-63 Cooper had 997cc which was a different engine (bore and stroke) - the only real way of solving this visually would be a rear view as the Mk2 had a larger rear window - not always obvious, but it can be identified if the shot is good enough - and is the only feature which could not be altered. Visually as things stand, this could still be a Mk2 which has had a Mk1 front end added and Mk2 grille thrown on - no idea why they'd do that, but it's do-able if they were determined enough, or if it's a scrappie victim dressed up with convenient bits for filming. If it is a Mk1, then the only solution which meets all the clues identified so far is a 64-65 Cooper; a shot of the dashboard should show additional Cooper dials. |

I can't tell! https://s1.dmcdn.net/v/9R7Km1NOnrxLUHMAa/x1080 (actual video is here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x518qmc) Though note the door pockets... The engine transplant could've been done by a previous owner - the Mini modification scene was massive!! -- Last edit: 2020-11-19 03:55:06 |

Yes it's a Mk1 rear window - compare wider Mk2. Door pockets were same for Mk1 and Mk2. And it does have the 3 dial oval instrument panel (at about 00:50) which would match a Mk1 Cooper, although also fits a normal Mk2 1000 (only the Mk2 850 kept the round single dial format). So 64-65 Cooper, identified as Austin by the miniforum link. |

Ah yeah, I see it now: subtly in the width of the screen. The best picture I've found for comparison: Link to "i.pinimg.com" Think my door pocket point was reinforcing that if the plate indicated a genuine age, it must be a late example of a MK2 even. Finally remembering a bit more about 1000cc Coopers now, completely glossed over the dials!! Interestingly the DVLA has now set its year to 1970, even though earlier comments say it wasn't available. A right hodgepodge then!! I guess the plate could've come with the donor parts or be a late re/registration, though it wasn't active by the time of filming. Those parts must've been well secured, and presumably the base Cooper was pretty tired, but the good news is that this Mini is being slowly restored - the last update said it's been completely stripped. |

I always keep an eye on this one! I’m the person who now owns this car - hopefully I can offer some help in deciphering what it actually is... The car itself is a 1966 Austin Mini Deluxe with its original 850cc engine. You may note in a few shots of the episode that the car has a ‘magic wand’ gear stick with chrome extender on the top. Obviously, in the episode, it was set up to look like a later MK2 Mini. It had holes cut out to accommodate the later rear lights, a MK2 grille screwed in place of the original MK1 one and the registration number that was put on it for the Mr Bean episode was from a 1969 Mini 1000. Remember that in TV of this period, the cars seen on screen rarely wore their actual registration. Hope this helps! |

So cool to know; it's great the car's survived in any form! I read it was even more destructively modded later on? Are you willing to share its real reg?? -- Last edit: 2020-12-13 20:04:46 |
