That's a very good question. Maybe it was an old way to indicate your license category and who was allowed to drive on certain roads: whetever you're allowed to drive on urban roads, main roads, highway etc? I've noticed some of these old italian trucks have a different colored stripe as well. I've seen some in red or blue. An old Alfa Romeo truck for instance with a diagonal stripe either in red or blue: Link to "www.romasparita.eu" Any one knows for sure what it means? That would be really interesting to know. |

I know only, why the line and the fenders are white: in Italy the fenders and parts of the grille/hood of civil vehicles were painted with white lead (mandatory after darkening begins, which means that in the dark it should not be driven with lights on). After WW II a lot of vehicles were not repainted immediately (which is ducumented in a lot of pictures on our DB. |

it was because there were no white lines on the roads, they carried it with them so they always drove well to the right  more seriously : it remind me some military truck... ? |

A red stripe mean a truck for goods transportation on own account (own business), a white stripe with red borders mean a truck for goods transportation for third parties or lease, a blue stripe (very rare) it's for scheduled service goods transportation. Nowadays they are mandatory only over 6 tons, until the 80s circa you found it also on vans or smaller trucks. Sorry for my English, I hope it's understandable! |
