That's the new Supra? It's horrible! It looks like it's wincing in agony. -- Last edit: 2019-05-20 18:25:51 |

has a BMW inline-6 and a line that reminds me a little convertible from the same manufacturer... |

This could be an unpopular opinion but I like this car. |

i don't exactly hate it but i wonder why Toyota couldn't provide their own engine for it.. |

If they can't afford a stylist, there's no way they could afford to provide their own engine. |

Like most of today's Toyotas, the front end is a complete mess. Everything else looks great! I guess there's always rhinoplasty? |

After checking things a bit, I'm not sure I'd like to change the J29 code to these DB ones at the moment. There's a already whole bunch of them for every engine variation and steering wheel location. So far I've found DB02, DB21, DB22, DB23, DB41, DB42, DB43, DB81 & DB82. Identifying what exact version each entry will be won't be easy. Edit : OK, I'll just replace J29 with DB. -- Last edit: 2024-01-13 05:10:29 |

Toyota wanted an Inline 6 for the Toyota Supra, which the Inline 6 engine has been a staple for the Supra since the MK1 A40 Celica Supra(although the MK5 A90/J29/DB Supra does have the lower model with the Inline 4 B48 BMW engine, that was cancelled off production due to low sales compared to the sales of the Supra MK5 A90/J29/DB vehicles that have the B58 inline 6 BMW engine) Also, it would've costed Toyota a lot of money, along with having to spend too much time for research and development to create their own Inline 6 which would've been one of the things that would've made the final pricetag of the MK5 Supra higher. Along with creating an engine that can meet stricter emissions. The 2JZ and 1JZ inline 6 engines are in different other Toyota/Lexus vehicles and not just the Supra(1JZ in the MK3 A70 Supra and 2JZ in the MK4 A80 Supra. Which the JZ series engines were NOT in those first, especially the 2JZ that was in the Toyota Aristo/Lexus GS first). The better choice was to go to BMW for an Inline 6 which is the B58 Inline 6. Which that engine can take over 800 horsepower on Stock Bottom End (there are sources that also show that the B58 engine can take over 1000 horsepower on Stock Bottom End or on Stock Block. Pappadakis, a well known drag racer and drifter had made his B58 engine in his MK5 Supra for drifting to over 1200 horsepower https://youtu.be/Q_ctVmsno-k?si=Dtqp3zZqot-Pr9YO ). There are also MK5 A90/J29/DB Supras with the B58 engine that have shown(especially on YouTube) that have been clocking around the seconds of 7s on the drag strip. The B58 inline 6 engine has won multiple awards, most notably being recognized by WardsAuto as one of their "10 Best Engines" multiple times. Specifically, it won the award in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Besides all that, no one complains about the McLaren F1, the British Naturally Aspirated Supercar in the world, for having a BMW V12 engine. Along with the fact that other vehicles of a manufacture having engines from a different vehicle manufacturer which the list of the vehicles of that goes on -- Last edit: 2025-06-27 15:48:48 |

Keep in mind that the MK4 A80 Supra also received criticism for it's looks, especially it's "cat fish" front. It said to look like a "budget front engined Ferrari" along with not looking like the MK3 A70 Supra especially not having the pop-up headlights like the MK3 A70 Supra. And the MK4 A80 Supra sold poorly until it's production ended(the MK3 A70 Supra is the best selling Supra to date, not the MK4 A80 Supra). |
