 The Green Cross Man is played by David Prowse who is best known as being the stand in actor for Darth Vader.

Quote Prowse played the physical form of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy.[6] Prowse spoke the dialogue during filming, but Lucas claimed he wanted a "darker voice"—a deeper, more reverberating voice, and had James Earl Jones provide the voice instead, deeming Prowse's West Country accent unsuitable for the character.

 He may be best known for Darth Vader, but wiki says he got the MBE for being Green Cross Code Man. So being an irritating superhero with a silly quiff and green tights beats being a Sith Lord with a black cape and a mask made out an old Polaroid camera. Moral of the story - if you want fame and recognition while dressed up like a silly knob, do it by saving kids lives and don't waste time pissing about in far-flung galaxies battling scary monsters.
