Gie is a 2005 Indonesian biopic film that is based on stories written by Soe Hok Gie, an activist & a nature lover that lives throughout the Soekarno Regime & the Soeharto regime, the movie is set in the 50s-60s era Indonesia. This movie is based on Catatan Seorang Demonstran (Eng: Annotations of a Demonstrator), a book written by Soe Hok Gie himself. Directed & written by Riri Riza, also featuring the actor Nicholas Saputra as the main character, Gie, many scenes depicting Gie's personal life is an interpretation of what happened based on his journal.

I've personally watched this movie several times, and it became easily my favorite Indonesian movie so far. The 50-60s era in Indonesia is quite niche, except the year 1965 where almost everybody here remembers it. I'm talking about G30S/PKI, there is a movie based on this historical event called Pemberontakan G30S/PKI (1984) a documentary film about a failed coup d'etat at 30th September 1965 that framed PKI (Partai Komunis Indonesia, Indonesian Communist Party). FYI: PKI the biggest party (the second biggest communist party in the world at that time after Soviet Union & China) that was supported by President Soekarno himself. In the Gie movie, you can see various PKI activities like campaigns, also what happen afterwards to the members of the party after the 30th September tragedy.

Enough for those though, were here to appreciate the attention of detail (and VEHICLES) that the movie offers :) For example:
City Development Through The Years (Construction of National Monument (Monas), Indonesia's first mall, Sarinah & Hotel Indonesia, Indonesia's first 5 star hotel)

The movie is filmed in various locations including Gunung Gede Pangrango & Lembah Mandalawangi. The city scenes were taken around various spots in Jakarta, but also including Semarang, near the Kota Lama area & the university scenes were heavily taken on Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) depicting the old vibe of Universitas Indonesia (UI). The main focus, 50-60s vehicles is obtained through owners across various regions as mentioned here:

As you can see from the movie, the Indonesian traffic at that time were dominated by big gas guzzling American cars & trucks, and some European models like Opel, Fiat & Austin/Morris. Even the public transportation used these brands. The Japanese imports started taking over in the early 70s, that lasted till today. In the past you can see Chevrolets, Fords, Plymouths, etc, now you can only see Toyotas, Daihatsus, Suzukis, Nissans, etc on the public roads.

This movie is by far the most accurate for its historical detail & surroundings. Some anachronisms were present, but I understand it though. The movie was set on 2004, at that time it's not an easy task to obtain these vehicles, especially in the 80,90 & early 2000s many of these big 50-60s vehicles were sold to the junkyard. The reason? The price you sold as a car is nowhere near as you sold it as metal components. Because of it, many that had these oddities prefers to junk them rather than to sell it as a whole vehicle. You can also see the destruction of these cars in the IMCDB page itself, especially about old 70-80s Indonesian action movies :(
