![]() ![]() ![]() At long last have found a copy of this lost gem of a BBC Scotland film from 1981 made by the great Bill Forsyth (Local Hero, Gregory's Girl etc). ![]() Based on a fairly lightweight short story by Orkney author George Mackay Brown (he has his fans, but I'm not particularly convinced), it's a gentle 48-minute ghost story set in and around the village of St Margarets Hope in the island of South Ronaldsay on Orkney. Forsyth weaves his magic, and although nothing much happens, it happens beautifully and poignantly as an old sea captain in a rundown cottage reflects on his life. Can be seen here. About as thrilling and suspenseful as an advert for Stannah stair-lifts, but that's not the point - it creates a subtle but powerful atmosphere. Highly recommended if that sort of thing presses your buttons. An old man with his new-fangled wireless ![]() ![]() - he doesn't have electricity, so has to keep buying batteries at the village shop, which has lots of tins ![]() and where if you want brown bread instead of white, it has to be specially ordered in. Only 3 entries to post. |
