There's actually a MODERN car in the background as Costner and Harrelson are driving through the poor run down neighborhood.

This movie was about the manhunt for armed robbers and murderers, Bonnie and Clyde and their gang who were responsible for a number of armed robberies and murders throughout the Wheatbelt Plain of the US between the 25th February 1932 and the 16th April 1934 and their deaths near Gibsland, Louisiana on the 23rd May 1934.

In their spree, the Barrow Gang had either killed, wounded or kidnapped at least 13 people and robbed various armories, banks and small town stores.

During their spree, fellow armed robber and "Public Enemy No. 1", John Dillinger called the pair, "A pair of young punks, they give bank robbery a bad name".

The list of their victims they killed, wounded or kidnapped had included nine police officers.

John Bucher - Jeweller, shot by Barrow gang member, Raymond Hamilton during the robbery of Bucher's jewellery store in Hillsboro, Texas on the 30th April 1932.

The robbery netted Clyde and Hamilton $2,500 in cash and jewellery, despite the fact that Clyde was in the car as a getaway driver, Bucher's wife had identified Clyde as one of the shooters.

Eugene Moore - Deputy Sheriff with the Atoka County Sheriff's Office, spotted Clyde, Hamilton, and fellow gang member, Ross Dyer sitting in a car drinking a bottle of whiskey, shot trying to arrest Barrow and Hamilton for refusing to put the bottle of whisky away in the parking lot outside a country dance at Springtown, Oklahoma on the 5th August 1932.

Moore's partner, Sheriff Charles Maxwell, despite being shot six times, had survived his injuries.

Joseph Johns - Deputy Sheriff with the Eddy County Sheriff Office, abducted by Bonnie, Clyde, and Hamilton while checking out their stolen car outside the home of Bonnie's aunt, Mrs. E.M. Stamp near Carlsbad, New Mexico on the afternoon of the 14th August 1932.

Malcolm Davis - Deputy Sheriff with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, was staking out the Barrow's Gang hideout in Dallas, Texas with other deputies, shot by Barrow during a shootout at the Gang's hideout in the early hours of the 6th January 1933.

Harry McGinnis - Detective with the Newton County Sheriff's Department, was part of a five-man team to conduct a raid on suspected bootleggers, shot along with his partner, John Harryman by Clyde and Buck Barrow during a shootout at the Barrow Gang's hideout at Joplin, Missouri on the 13th April 1933.
