This scene was an reenactment of the murders of Texas Highway Patrolmen Holloway "H.D." Murphy and Edward Wheeler who were shot by Barrow Gang members; Clyde Barrow and Henry Methvin near the intersection of Route 114 and Dove Road near Grapevine (now Southlake), Texas on morning of the 1st April (Easter Sunday) 1934. According to the investigation, Bonnie, Clyde and Methvin were sitting in the car on the side of a dirt road off the main road, waiting for Barrow Gang member; Raymond Hamilton as they were planning to ambush and kill Hamilton as the Barrow Gang had a falling out with Hamilton over the proceeds from their robberies, resulting in Hamilton and his girlfriend; Mary O'Dare to quit the gang and leading the Barrow Gang to suspect that Hamilton was going to turn in the gang to the police. As Bonnie, Clyde and Methvin were waiting for Hamilton, the officers spotted their Ford on the side of the dirt road and thinking they had car trouble, turned off the main road and pulled up and as they started to walk towards the car, Barrow and Methvin then drew their guns and shot the officers, killing both them. After killing the officers, Methvin and Barrow got back in the car and drove off. It was believed that Bonnie was the second shooter as a farmer whose farm overlooked the scene stated that he saw Bonnie and Clyde shoot the officers. After the murders, public opinion turned against Bonnie and Clyde, the chief of the Texas Highway Patrol, Louis "L.G." Phares offered a reward of $1,000 for the bodies of Bonnie and Clyde, this was followed by a additional reward of $500 each offered by the Texas State Governor, Miriam "Ma" Ferguson for both Bonnie and Clyde. -- Last edit: 2022-04-16 17:10:03 |
