![]() ![]() ![]() 1984 German made-for-TV movie about the vigilante killing of Klaus Grabowski by Marianne Bachmeier, who's daughter Grabowski had killed. Grabowski's fiancée had turned him into the police and upon hearing the heaping plate of BS that Grabowski was intending to feed the court, that Marianne's daughter Anna said he'd accuse him of hurting her and that he had no choice but to kill her, Marianne purchased a .22 Beretta pistol, snuck it into the courtroom on the day that Grabowksi was to give his testimony and once he was seated, Marianne walked up behind him, drew her gun, and shot him six times in the back. He died moments later on the courtroom floor. Marianne offered no resistance when the courtroom authorities restrained her and showed no remorse, stating "I wanted to shoot him in the face. Unfortunately, I hit him in the back. I hope he's dead." In a well-ordered society such as Germany, vigilante killings were unheard of. With this one happening in a courtroom by a grieving mother towards her daughter's murderer, the German media went into an absolute frenzy over the shooting, with Marianne's face appearing on magazine covers, newspapers, and on TV. Public opinion of the shooting was divided; some wholeheartedly supported her and felt that the German judiciary was too soft on sex offenders and Grabowski had just got what was coming to him. Others, although they sympathized with Marianne's grief, could not condone her actions. Regardless, she received an unending stream of support from the German public, including cards, flowers, gifts, and a fund was set up to raise money for her court cases. German magazine Stern bought her story for 100'000 Deutsche Marks. Marianne herself was held in a secure psychiatric institute, as she was deemed a flight risk. She refused to co-operate with the court-appointed doctor and everyone else who was trying to get her to admit that the killing was planned, as the prosecution wanted to charge her with murder. It was soon Marianne's day in court and the German media couldn't get enough of it. She showed no discomfort in front of the cameras and was striking and articulate. She was charged with murder but the judge, reading the room, ultimately ruled that the killing was manslaughter, not murder. The prosecution was furious but there was nothing they could do. Marianne served three years and was released. She ultimately passed away in 1996 at the age of 46 and was buried next to Anna. Rest in peace to them both. In 2023, a clip from this film (same clip that the above screencap of Marianne Bachmeier shooting Grabowski is from) began making the rounds on social media claiming to be footage of the actual real-life shooting.
