boys bible has established that Hong Kong didn't much like Australian, British, or American cars. How did they feel about German cars?

Could it be a Manta Berlinetta ? I suspect so for the added side script.

I haven't said Hong Kong didn't like cars of Australian, British, etc. I say Hong Kong people only like Japanese goods. :D

For German cars, see which brand.
In 1970s, the economic condition of Hong Kong was not good. At that time many people could at most afford a VW Beetle. However, they desired a Mercedes-Benz very much.
In many Hong Kong movies, the poor character usually had this thought. (This is the example: /movie_76580-Qian-zuo-guai.html)
Nowadays although the rich customers choose Mercedes-Benz, they don't think anymore that having a Mercedes-Benz is wonderful.
A, B & C-Klasse are not very expensive for Hong Kong people to purchase.

In 1970s, there was the golden era of VW in Hong Kong. Except Beetles and vans, Typ 31 was also common.
Since 1980s, VW was defeated by Japanese rivals, and then only VW Golf is sold well.
The main point is that: the price of VW Golf is similar with Toyota Camry, and Camry is bigger than Golf.
I know some people of western world like collecting VW Beetles and related things. But in Hong Kong, very few people do so.
For VW Vans, since the [Typ 2/ T3], the sales had dropped sharply. I think it's because the space of the box of T3 is not big enough, comparing with Japanese vans.

And for BMW, usually Hong Kong people regard it as a high-performance sportscar.
Mainly BMW 1 and 3 are common, and no one regard BMW as luxury cars. (Example: /vehicle_727054-BMW-323i-E21-1981.html)
I have seen that a BMW E66 of 2002 is sold in the price level of a Honda Accord of the same year!
At the same time a BMW E46 is the same price level of that Honda Accord!

Like many countries, Hong Kong people regard Porsche as luxury cars.
However, Opel is not common in Hong Kong. I think it's because Opel is relatively low-end.

For the commercial vehicles, some Mercedes-Benz [T1] (later Sprinter), [LN2], Atego and Actros are applied in Hong Kong.
But mainly large companies choose these. Small firms like Japanese products.

Generally for German cars, the situation is so complicated that it's quite tough to conclude.
To make summary, if it's luxury brand (like Mercedes-Benz & Porsche), Hong Kong people like it.
If not, see whether the model is high-performance car. (VW Golf, BMW 1 & 3 fit this point.)

Is there still an import of Opel? I'm not sure, if they are on any Asian markets nowadays. So 2004 was the lst year for Opel in Japan.

I've just cone back from seeing Comrades, Almost a Love Story at the BFI -- they're been running a massive Chinese film season -- and one of the characters, an immigrant from the Mainland, gets a Mercedes when she's "made it". (The film is set between 1986 and 1996.)

The smaller rectangular badge identifies a 1900 and the other one seems to be the conventional manta ray and not the word Berlinetta. With the vinyl roof, these wheels and the rubber trim on the bumpers, it could be the SR version, but it used to be identified by the two letters on the right of the bootlid after the word Manta that this car doesn't seem to have.

More examples about Mercedes-Benz.

1. /vehicle_715351-Mercedes-Benz-280-S-W108-1968.html

This one talks about in 1970s, a thief was so poor that he needed to steal money in the street. Later he met a lawyer, who was very rich. This photo shows that the lawyer lived in a villa, having a Mercedes-Benz to drive.

2. /vehicle_653914-Mercedes-Benz-SLC-C107.html

This is a story of a rich man, about meeting with womens. The pictures shows a party of rich men in the movie, in which a lot of luxury cars parked in a villa. Mercedes-Benz were there!

3. /vehicle_727050-Mercedes-Benz-Lang-W123-1982.html

Although those're only background car, I see the Benz Langs were arranged by the directors, to represent there was a high-class entertainment center in this street.

4. /movie_100045-Long-Feng-cha-lou.html

In this movie, all Benz cars were for the managers. But the BMWs were for the gangsters to battle with each other!
