Agree that this is a [W108], but I don't understand how you can identify it as a particular model and year. This body was introduced in 1965 and had 1965 onwards a choice of three engines; M108 for the 250S [W108.012] until 1969, M129 for the 250SE [W108.014] until 1968 or M189 for the 300SEb[W108.015] until 1967. During 1968 also a few uprated [W108] were equipped with these older rims; 280S [W108.016] with M130 V engine, and 280SE [W108.018] with M130 E engine. There was also a possibility to order the engine M189 with air suspension, but the body was then called [W109] and was slightly longer. From the middle of 1968 there were a new type of wheels, like here http://www.thestreetpeep.com/2012/05/1972-mercedes-benz-280se.html . -- Last edit: 2012-10-28 20:51:54 |

It is a W108 for sure. A pre-1968 due the old wheels. No SEL, because of the short wheelbase. The engine-version is never identifyable from this angle. -- Last edit: 2012-10-28 20:53:16 |

I thought so firstly as well, but a serch a year or so ago convinced me that during the first year of the 280S/SE version the older wheels were used. I'd say it's a pre 1969 for sure... -- Last edit: 2012-10-28 21:32:26 |

From all that was already written, I think it makes more sense to call it a 1966+ 250 S or SE. |

I'm not sure you've understood what I've written. To clarify: Choice between 1965-69 250S, 1965-68 250SE, 1965-67 300SEb, 1968 280S and 1968 280SE. This IS NOT for sure a 250S! And why a 1966? Why should I be believed? In my care (I'm not going to go into details!) is a 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SE [W108.014] in Arab grey. Unfortunately it has not been used for a period of 10 years and I'm trying to get it going again. During this time I've had it I've tried to understand what car it is and, when hunting for spare parts, trying to understand why some parts are different from one year to another. One example is one clutch master cylinder that was only used on the 1965 model year for the 250S and SE until it was decided to use the same as the 300SEb. What is your experience with the [W108]? -- Last edit: 2012-10-29 15:08:08 |

I think IMCDb is using year of make on old cars, even if some were released a few months in advance. If cars are identical you may choose the first year. I like the 250S but this is not a mechanics forum. -- Last edit: 2012-10-30 18:47:48 |

@maxp: I still don't think you understand my point. I have never intended this to be a mechanics forum. What I'm saying is that this is a [W108], and that is everything that is possible to prove from this angle. IT ISN'T POSSIBLE TO SEE WHAT ENGINE IS FITTED!!!! Please remove the fact that this is for sure a 250S! My purpose with the mechanics arguing is that 1965 (preseries between July and September) is different from 1966-67 and should deserve to be separate. It's also acknowledged by Mercedes themselves as a separate year http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Kategorie:W108/W109 . |
