Probably old footage by 1964 - very few single seater racing cars were still front-engined by then. I'd guess a famous French Grand Prix crash for a car #11 in perhaps 1959-62?? Car is light colour eg french racing blue or silver, not red (Italian) or british racing green.

I have looked at this several times. You are right that it would be older than 1964. I wondered if it was at Monza or maybe Avus. Are there any other frames which show any other cars? In the second thumb can be seen the distinctive exhaust outlet which would give a clue to the make of car. Of course it may not necessarily be an F1 car - might be a lesser formula. Also in the second and third thumbs are four idential advertising hoardings which someone might recognise.

I have done some digging and found it. It is on this page - http://forums.autosport.com/lofiversion/index.php/t76970-250.html . I thought it looked like Avus. Hans Hermann crashed his #11 BRM on the 36th lap of the 1959 German Grand Prix - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_German_Grand_Prix . I don't know what colour the car was.

I love it when something mysterious is tracked down to the exact details. This race entry was a BRM P25 as stated, but run by the British Racing Partnership, not BRM. "BRP was a Formula One team, and latterly constructor, from the UK. It was established by Alfred Moss and Ken Gregory — Stirling Moss's father and former manager respectively — in 1957 to run cars for Stirling, when not under contract with other firms. BRP ran a Cooper-Borgward F2 car and BRM F1 car in 1959, the latter being demolished in a spectacular crash at the Avus street circuit. BRP was the first Formula One team to sell the entire identity of the team in return for sponsorship income, when they became 'Yeoman Credit Racing' for the season." from http://tripatlas.com/British_Racing_Partnership . So colour still unknown, but explains why it was not BRG; presumably either related to Yeoman sponsorship or perhaps German silver for the driver at his home event. Accident caused by brake failure, and car hit hay bales. Driver fell out early so not injured during subsequent somersaults.

The colour of Herrmann's car is Linden Green, a very pale shade in which BRP cars were usually painted.

"BRP entered Stirling Moss in two Grand Prix races during the 1959 season. BRM was trying to recruit Stirling Moss to drive their P25 model car, but he wasn't comfortable with BRM's team management. Alfred Moss negotiated a deal where Stirling would drive a loaned BRM P25 but it would wear BRP livery and would be maintained and entered by BRP. Stirling Moss ended up suffering a disqualification at the French Grand Prix, but recovered to place second two weeks later at the British Grand Prix. A schedule conflict prevented Moss from driving the P25 at Berlin in the German Grand Prix, so Hans Herrmann drove it instead. Herrmann had a spectacular accident. The BRM P25 had its rear brake installed on its propshaft where it was subject to an acute vibration, with an unfortunate result being that it severed a brake pipe and had a total brake failure. The car was written off, which ended the agreement between BRM and BRP." - http://www.britishracecar.com/KurtDelBene-BRP.htm
