C140 seems to exists, but it is an older model (or the one partially visible on the right?) |

No need to repeat it several times a day, I'm waiting for a confirmation from yoda_57 or at least more information on where he found the C215/C140 info ![]() |

Google says one thing: C215. Mercedes and MBWORLRD says it is W215. Oh lord, I'm confused!!! |
◊ 2005-09-19 18:48 |
You gave an URL of MBWorld (which has nothing official, on some other sites about Mercedes they say C215) but not a reference from Mercedes itself ![]() On Wikipedia it is listed as C215 and shares the same page as W215: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_C215 -- Last edit: 2005-09-19 19:02:13 |

Kowalski, first you said it a C215, now you say it's a W215. No problem for us to change regulary the names ![]() ![]() I'm not able to know on this picture if it's a W or the C... -- Last edit: 2005-09-20 18:58:17 |

I thought that CL-Klasse were only coupés ![]() |

This car is one of the most problematic ![]() This page is for the C215, so if on the picture it is not a C215 we'll have to find another one. |

As there is always quite a bit of confusion on how to classify a Mercedes-Benz, let me give some information, which could be used for other images, too. The maker is DaimlerChrysler (without a dash!), since the merger (takeover ;-) with Chrysler in 1998. Before that it was Mercedes-Benz AG (1989-1998), and before that it was Daimler-Benz (1926-1989). In 1926 Benz and Daimler (the German Daimler, not the British) merged. That is the corporation. The cars and trucks are called Mercedes-Benz. Daimler "invented" the name "Mercédès" in 1902 for the Mercédès Simplex. Actually Mercédès was Daimlers niece. (So we now have a car with a girl's name ;-) Now to the letters and numbers: Mercedes-Benz introduced the prefix letters in 1993 with the then new C-Klasse. Later followed the E-Klasse, S-Klasse, and so forth. The single car then gets the name e.g. C190 (=C-Klasse, 1.9 Liter), or S500 (=S-Klasse, 5.0 Liter). Today we have the following classes: A-Klasse (compact limousine) B-Klasse (slightly larger than A, they call it sports tourer) C-Klasse (mid-size limousine) CL-Klasse (cabriolet or coupé) CLK-Klasse (coupé, based on E) CLS-Klasse (coupé, based on S) E-Klasse (large limousine) G-Klasse (4x4) M-Klasse (SUV) O-Klasse (bus, the numbering here is slightly different) R-Klasse (van-limousine, again called sports tourer) S-Klasse (very large limousine) SL-Klasse (roadster) SLK-Klasse (roadster) U-Klasse (Unimog) V-Klasse (van) So that are the actual car names. For example we have a "Mercedes-Benz C190" or a "Mercedes-Benz S500". Over the years there are of course changes in the basic car design. Even though the name under which a car is being sold is still the same (e.g. "Mercedes-Benz C190"), the type series differs. That is were the "W" letters get involved. The C-Klasse is for example the type series (Baureihe) 202, usually written W202. This W-number denotes a basic model type, not saying anything about the engine. This was started around 1930. Before Mecedes-Benz started the prefix lettering the cars were differenciated only by a number for the engine size and sometimes postfix letters like "D" for diesel, "S" for the S-Klasse. Actually the S-class was known as "S-Klasse" for a long time, but that was not an official name until the new system started. What is now known as "Mercedes-Benz C190" (W202 model), was before a "Mercedes-Benz 190" (W201 model). The same type with a larger engine is now "Mercedes-Benz C230", was before "Mercedes-Benz 190 2.3". That was to show the difference to the predecessor of the E-Klasse, the model W-124, which you could get as a "Mercedes-Benz 230". One speciality is that the roadster models got a "R" letter for model classification. I don't know why this was started. If you are now totally confused check out the DaimlerChrysler pages http://www.daimlerchrysler.com or the Mercedes-Benz pages http://www.mercedes-benz.de And now we can start to reclassify all the Mercedes-Benz images ;-) |

Do not reclassify too fast : as Yoda_57 said somewhere else in internal Mercedes documentation the C is also sometimes used in addition of the R and the W ![]() Edit : cf this comment : /vehicle.php?id=202 -- Last edit: 2005-10-04 16:54:48 |

Perhaps Mercedes-Benz has recently introduced a "C" type series, just like the "R" type series. That makes it rather confusing, as the C-Type (for coupé and cabriolet (?)) has nothing to do with the C-Class (limousine), the R-Type (for roadster) has nothing to do with the R-Class (sports tourer). I will try to find out what is right and what is wrong. |

It would maybe better to open a thread about that on this forum ![]() |
◊ 2005-10-04 17:51 |
I checked the CL operators manual. (no, I don't own the car, the manual is online :-) There is not a single word about the type series (Baureihe). As I don't want to search for too long I just asked DaimlerChrysler by eMail. Let's see what they will say. |

Good idea! I will post the answer from DC there. |

Well, doesnt matter if it is C215 or W215, the silver car on the left is 100% S500 W220. The car on the right is SL R129. ![]() |

As said above, this is the page of the C215 that could be in the movie. But we have to recheck all the Mercedes of that movie as I said in the comments of the main movie page ![]() The page for the W220: /vehicle_2798-Mercedes-Benz-S-600-W220-1999.html And for the R129: /vehicle_2799-Mercedes-Benz-SL-600-R129-1998.html -- Last edit: 2006-01-09 23:38:53 |

How do we know, that 1999 CL500 is surely C215?? In the movie was one CL, but in older shape - C140. I think, that will be the solving of our problem ![]() |
◊ 2006-01-09 23:50 |
Because a 1999 car should be a 215 rather than a 140, but it may be another small error of the movie actually ![]() |

Model 1998, also for the USA I think. |
◊ 2006-07-24 11:43 |
This is indeed one of the later CL C140 model 1998. |

Are there other manufacturers the can rival model/internal code name confusion like M-B? |
◊ 2010-01-28 02:41 |
BMW and the "E" series. this car is a C140. C coupes, A for convertibles, R for roadsters, T for wagons, W for suvs and sedans |

1997 S-Klasse Coupe or 1998-1999 CL. Could be a 600 with RPO 261 (deletion of the V12 badge) and/or 260 deletion of rear badges. |

I would have said that this is more likely to be the newer '98-99 CL due to the obvious MB product placement (1999 CL 500 'Donna' is also the one reported on the car list, which revealed to be quite inconsistent though), but a MY 97 would be correct actually: https://mb140.school/2023/05/21/impression-gone-in-sixty-seconds-2000/ |
