This is actually a 1970 Ward LaFrance P80 Ambassador / 1989 Ranger - EOne. Chicago Fire Department had six of these. As of now, a group of guys near the Chicagoland area are in the process of restoring this particular rig (Chicago FD Shop #D-374) to it's original movie condition. It should also be noted that Chicago FD Shop #D-375 (another identical 1970 WLF / 1989 Ranger - EOne) was used in the film. None of the six WLF's were exactly identical, as they all varied in some form. Engine 17 also was renumbered to Engine 51 for certain shots, and vice-versa. To the trained eye, one can easily note the differences between the two different engines used in this movie. You can follow the progress on the restoration on Facebook. The page is called 'Backdraft Engine 17'. They are also planning on 'restoring' Ladder 46 from the film, though since the actual Ladder 46 from the movie was totaled in the wreck scene and eventually scrapped, they are using an identical Mack CF chassis and parts from another Pirsch ladder. |

Engine 17 at the beginning of the film during the 1971 scenes was an American LaFrance. Whilst in the rest of the film, it was a Ward LaFrance. |
