1987-1990. Then again, it has those headlights of an '86. I don't think it's a 9C1.

No, it has the composite headlight. There's just a thick black line drawn on it for some reason.

Anachronism since the movie was set in 1980.

From IMDB:

"Anachronisms: The opening scene of the police car features an 1988 Chevrolet Caprice and not a 1980 (or earlier). There are numerous late 80's Caprices in the film - all too new for the setting of 1980."

It's amazing! Caprices from the late 80's which feature in movie set in the early 80's? That's not possible!

Even with that spotlight?

I wrote that comment when another previous shot of the car was posted. Much of the car wasn't visible. i'd like to see a better shot to be completely sure, but the spotlight does make me think a bit more that it could be a 9C1.

This car doesn't get many screentime (This might be the best shot). Maybe check the Ford Granada. It is the same car.

I was just thinking the same thing.

It could very well be a 9C1. No rubber on the bumpers, small side biew mirrors, search light, push bumpers(-ish).. But it's certainly been (poorly) modified to look like a pre-'86.

I think that that black line was drawn to make the car look somewhat, pre 1980, as it doesnt take a genius to identify a 1987-90 caprice

Actually, the car in the opening scene is a 1990. You can tell because it is the ONLY year of the Caprice's to have the seatbelt mounted on the door, rather than the B-pillar. This was the one thing that bothered me in the movie. Being an avid cop car fan and owning an '89 Caprice 9C1 myself, it was sort of disapointing to find out later on that the movie took place in 1980. Also, it's hard to tell if a Caprice is a 9C1, by just looking at a picture. The only way to tell would be to check the SPID label in the trunk (unless it's been painted over or if it's even the orignal trunk lid to the car) and look for the RPO code "9C1". There are many other things to check for, but cop cars can/could have been ordered with regular civilian things, so unless you can check that trunk label it's anyones guess. I'd say more than likely it IS a 9C1.

Isn't the main picture quite fuzzy and could possibly be replaced by one of the other ones?

Ford_Guy US

Well, my previous comment still stands ^^^

Anyhow, I found the car:

Did they keep the lightbar when they finished with the car?

Ford_Guy US

2008-12-17 22:55

I don't know...it didn't say anything on the site about the lightbar.

Snookie US

2008-12-18 06:30

Maybe the lightbar was just a non operable prop, or the car can be fitted with different lightbars depending on what type of squad car the car is portraying.

Nobody seems notice fact, that this generation Caprice wasn't changing much during production years and most of the viewers wouldn't determine it's vintage down to year.

This is clearly a 1986 model. That is indisputable.

In these shots, it does seem to have door mounted seat belts so it's possible they used a double that is not a 1990 model:
