1967 to 1977(last NSU rotary-engined--RO=Rotativ;80=project internal no.--car built),its lines serves also as inspiration for 1983 Audi 100-200

I remember these cars from when I lived there years ago.("Uncle Sam" sent me.....)Very innovative car of it's time, though IIRC,I think they also had a reputation for engine problems?(They wore out very quickly, needed overhauling often.)Understand the common modification later was to retrofit/adapt a Mazda rotary engine into them??

I also heard of fitting a European Ford V4 after the rotary engine wore out.

@carnerd: yes, some owners have done it. It was bullshit, especially the weak (too weak for the RO 80) and loud Ford V4. I know some guys, who had put the Audi 100/Porsche 924-engine inside, even with a selfmade longer front (cutted before the windscreen) - the car runs, but the RO 80-front is too flat for a piston-engine, so the Audi-engine was hanging lower, so the car couldn't drive any more on rough or buckly roads.
I remember one local NSU-meeting, where we went over old, pre-war streets in East Germany. We all had to wait for this RO 80 with Audi-engine, because he must drive very slow and carefully for avoiding smashing the oil-casing.

I've also heard about RO 80 with Alfa Romeo-boxer-engines and one guy in Israel has mounted a Subaru-boxer.

I wonder how well a Mazda rotary would work in one...13b, perhaps?

I must ask the RO 80-freaks, actually I haven't heard anything about a Mazda-engine in a RO 80. The usage of Mazda RX-parts is common, for example the sealing-stripes, because the material is much better.

yes, the legendary "kkm 871", this was the name of the 170 hp-engine. a very few of these, never officially offered, engines have survived. a horror for the owners, if they need special parts for the kkm 871.

Supposedly Ro 80 owners would wave to each other by holding up the same number of fingers as engines their car had worn out.

NSU replaced many worn engines under warranty, but this led to financial problems & their takeover by VW.

I've heard of German Ford V6s & as well as V4s being fitted to Ro 80s.
