For years I couldn't understand why the Americans were so angry at the Japanese. Sure, they attacked a US port (that the US, by the way, took by force in 1898) but what more was there? It seemed more like Hirohito wanted to prove something by allying with Hitler and showing his power in the Pacific. His reign didn't strike me as totalitarian like the mustache man. Why else would he be in power for 63 years?...

Then I learned about Tojo and was like "Oh...that's why..."

Hirohito (or the Japanese Imperial Family in general) was and is nowhere near as power-wielding as other world leaders ie.Hitler or Tojo, regardless of their era... Yes the Emperors between 1867 and 1947 signed off the most important things, but that was seldom used and only as a last resort when neither the Diet nor the military could agree to anything, and 99% of the time the Emperor just let them do their things (until Hirohito put the kibosh on the "We're somehow going to own those Yanks this time guys!" schtick that went on for 4+years). Also Tojo is overrated compared to Hitler or Stalin considering his tenure as Prime Minister was shot down the moment we lost Saipan, and not much later in spite of the war going on, unlike Hitler who we have an entire movie dedicated to the Fuhrer's... downfall (roll credits!)

Looks like some great footage of WWII-era Washington, DC!

"Background vehicles:"

2. 1940 Studebaker Champion
3. 1942 Plymouth

"Streetcars:"

1. Street sign for New Jersey Avenue but I'm not sure what the cross street is
2. Destination sign on the trolley is Eckington, a small neighborhood in DC's Northeast quadrant; Eckington is notable for being one terminus of the first electric railway in the city in 1888.
