All pictures upgraded from sharper quality DVD, and extras added in comments. Transporting a distillation column (50 tons, 132ft long, 8ft diameter - the biggest thing ever moved by road in UK at that point) from Greenwich to Grangemouth (500 miles in 2 weeks; 40 miles a day was considered good progress with 10-12 mph a good speed) up the old A6 (so through all the town/city centres before bypasses existed). Today AA Route planner says 440 miles in 7 hrs 14 minutes. Two Scammells pulling it, the Bedford as escort, all local police units en route deployed to help.
