Set in the USA but filmed in Latvia (the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR), according to user reviews on the IMDB.

The series was allocated to the Riga Film Studio and, according to one of the reviews, "the most probable explanation is that the All-Soviet Union Motor Museum was located in Riga, which meant that it was the one place in the USSR with access to a substantial number of American cars".

:wow: Where did they get all the Western cars? All from that museum? They aren't old and most of them aren't American.

I suppose that some apparatchik at Soviet television headquarters in Moscow thought that access to the Riga car museum would be helpful, even if it really was not. :)

Typical late 70's-mid 80's antycapitalistic movie based on american novel. Maybe "americans" not look here so satanic as "russians" in western movies, but "american" society treat their own citizens horrible. You should saw the "tv-commercial" in this movie. Anyway movie is too long and acting is not impressive, exepting the cars.
Off course many vehicles is inacurate, but soviet people saw no difference between capitalistic makes... as western do not saw it in socialistic.

For sure. After November 1989 in Western Germany every Eastern car was called "Trabbi", when the people have seen them. All COMECON-made cars, Wartburg, Lada, Dacia, Skoda, etc., everything was "Trabbi".
And older, more unknown or forgotten Western cars, too. :/ I've heard from the owners -and have heard by myself-, that they were "Trabbi". too: Borgward Arabella, Alfa Giulia Nova, Peugeot 304, Opel Kadett B, VW K 70 -yes- , VW 1600 Typ 3, BMW 1602 and many more...

I found this on a Russian video sharing site. :)
Part one: Link to "video.yandex.ru"
Part two: Link to "video.yandex.ru"

Now I understand why they used a Niva for the security van:
Spoiler - click here to see it
The robbers hide the security van inside a caravan which has been modified to open up at the back (like the coach in The Italian Job). Since the producers had to make do with a little Soviet caravan instead of a big American Airstream, they had to downsize the security van to fit inside.

P.S. Look out for stock footage of New York, London and Berlin (?) all used to represent the same American city. And in part two there's a GAZ 69 painted as a US Army vehicle. :)

Some of the European Fords are definitely German variants, while others could be UK or German. None are definitely British, so suggest all would be German (or possibly Antwerp) build. LHD supports this, though in itself not an absolute factor.

In this movie, in fact, a huge number of background cars. I do not even know if it will be practical to find and add them all.
