Is sawing snow a common practice in wherever this is?? And what do you then do with your piles of sawn-up snow?? |

A few years ago I watched a documentary which described how during the winter freeze, they would cut great sheets of ice from one of the Great Lakes and ship it out for food preservation. Overnight almost it became a huge industry with slipways, tracks, processing yards, shanty towns sprang up for labour force, and some people made big fortunes. The ice was shipped throughout US and across to Europe, then some bright spark discovered you could carry thick sheets of ice in the holds of ships down across the equator with minimal loss (well under 10%) from melting, so markets opened in Africa, India, Australia etc. Then after 20 years or thereabouts, the bubble burst as quickly as it had risen when the refrigerator was invented, and the whole thing disappeared. It was a fascinating story. |
