This one looks just like a V70 a friend bought for cheap. And talking about VINs. He said it was a 2003, it wasn't running and he was going to convert it to a tractor for his daughter who turns 15 soon. While we were working in the engine bay to get it to start I noticed that the air filter box was stamped 01. That was strange? Looking some more I noticed that all plastic and rubber parts were stamped 01.
"You said this was a 03 but do you know what I think"
"Don't say it...altered paper work? But the VINs all match up? "
Looking a bit more closely at the VIN tags we noticed that the one on the wheel well stil had the original rivets stamped with Volvo but the entire wheel well from the donor car was welded over the old one. The VIN on the firewall was also welded in. You could also tell that the VIN tag on the dash had been pryed off and replaced.
We stopped all work on that car and sent it to the junkyard.

:wow: that is really scary stuff people do. Isn't that a felony charge to alter or mess with a VIN plate? I know here that is a pretty hefty price to pay for altering this information and trying to resell the vehicle. Jetta added the VIN for you above.

The site we use to acquire this information is very problematic (sometimes you get results other times you do not).

It depends on the intent, if the intent is to sell a stolen car it can render up to two years in prison, fines and the car will, obviously, be illegal to use. If it's a vintage car you could probably argue that you did a rust repair and that you had to replace pretty much everything except the VIN...

VIN:
YV1 = Volvo cars Sweden
S = V70 Gen.2
W = V70
61 = B5244S S60/V70 2.4 FWD
R = Emissions code EM E1
9 = Check digit
1 = 2001
2 = Belgium Ghent plant
078882 = Sequential number

Engine:
B = Bensin
5 = 5 cylinder
24 = 2.4 litre
4 = 4 valves per cylinder
S = Naturally aspirated
