A Bentley S1/2 parading as a Rolls-Royce with the assistance of a neccessarily badly fitting radiator. |

This is a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, the sister of the Bentley S-Series. At the time Rolls owned and manufactured the Bentley line, having bought it in 1931. Producing the exact same car as a Bentley and a Rolls (only difference being the grill and badging) was their strategy for a couple decades. Although the strategy started well with this beautiful vehicle, it later practically ruined the Bentley name—it came to be called the cheaper Rolls, and other degrading appellatives. Thank goodness Bentley was freed from that cage (bought by the Volkswagen Group) and risen to greatness again. Anyway, this entry needs to be recategorized as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. Impossible for me to tell if it is SCI or SCII, though. |

^ It is a Bentley masquerading as a Royce. While the Crewe company felt it necessary to converge the designs of the two marques post WW2, the 1946 to 1955 ranges were not exactly similar, Bentleys generally having twin SU carburettors, Royces being fitted with a single (large) fixed choke instrument by Stromberg or Zenith. Bentleys supplied to the USA had to be emasculated by the single carburettor set up for some reason. There was no Bentley equivalent of the Silver Wraith chassis, and no direct Rolls-Royce equivalent of the R-type Continental. The 1955 to 65 cars converged even more. I do not have any knowledge of the cars produced after that date. -- Last edit: 2022-10-16 09:02:03 |
