I don't think the British-esque setting of the film was ever implicitly stated, but apparently it was partly "Americanized" for American children. You have British actors like Jim Broadbent and Hugh Laurie (also the guy who played Arthur Weasley in the HP series) and some American actors like John Goodman and the kid who befriends the Borrowers. Also, you see people eating American brands like Eggo waffles and Breyer's ice cream. And you have people driving 40 year old British cars on the right side of the road. I was 9 or 10 when this movie came out and I can remember thinking that England was really like this, being partly stuck in the 1950s in some way. lol -- Last edit: 2012-12-02 17:43:03 |

It's effective visually with all the cars being the same (but varied colours and models) and so much colour emphasis on a bland mid-green. None of the pictures have a hint of blue. Is there a better shot of the lilac pink roof in bottom right? It might well be a 1961 Minor Million - a prized edition of only 350 - http://www.minormillion.co.uk/Welcome.html . |

And it was filmed in Britain, according to IMDB. It is weird that they've done this. The Borrowers is a British story by the way, I remember it became popular in the 90s due to the TV series with Ian Holm. ![]() Never saw this film but they probably went for that timeless fantasy world effect where there's modern stuff alongside old stuff, so it's not just 1997 Britain. The numberplates are fictional, it's like they've copied the old pre-1970s style but with yellow numbers and letters instead of white/silver. -- Last edit: 2012-12-02 19:30:21 |

It was filmed in the village of Theale near Reading in Berkshire - I lived nearby. I bought a Mini from Shepperton studios shortly after location filming had completed and all these Morris's were there. The guy I bought from said that it wasn't supposed to be set anywhere in particular hence the slightly surreal look - everybody has the same car, driving on the right to appeal to a 'generic' audience. All supposed to be a sort of 'Neverland'. Potter, the big baddie in the film was supposed to be powerful and different to the rest, so he had the stretched Morris Oxford MO so that he appeared to be 'the boss' and more important than anyone else. A lot of effort went into the vans - the pest controllers one was filled with bizarre equipment. |
