The Charleston was never officially sold in US. They were imported on pre-1966 papers (the customers won't see the difference, anyway). In this way there were no needs to change things to US specs (except the sealed beam headlamps). This is a 1984 version (grey-grey, light grey taillight facia). |

Volkswagen Beetle enthusiasts pulled similar tricks until US customs got wise. The method was to buy a rustbucket Beetle in the US, take it to Mexico supposedly for restoration and clone the chassis number onto a newer Mexican Beetle. |
