seems a lot of Dart/ Aspen and Novas were used and wrecked , perhaps because they were very CHEAP?

They aren't nowadays expensive collector's cars either.

The same goes for the Ford Fairmonts and Mercury Zephyrs.

I owned a '73 Dart for 6 years. Gave me good service.
The slant 6 was an excellent engine.

The Aspens look like they were fleet models, so probably government vehicles that were sold at auction cheaply. They're about the right age for that. The Darts and Novas were about 10-year old basic transportation, so they were very cheap in the 1980s. They're justing starting to be thought of as collectible.
