The license plate is very hard to read, but I did my best to brighten up some screenshots in Photoshop. Looks like the plate is "295 WYI", which would line up with a very early 1979 issue.

The plates on Elliott's mom's Audi 5000S are fake props, but this one actually looks real (the numbers are embossed rather than flat, and the sequence matches up with the model year perfectly). The fact that the scene was at night and the plate is hardly visible also makes me think the prop team wouldn't have bothered to put a fake plate on the car.

I looked up "295 WYI" on the California smog history site, and it actually comes back as being active in a "Change of Ownership" program area, meaning that the car is/was registered in a zip code that doesn't require smog tests every two years; only when the car changes hands. Since it has zero smog records online, that means it hasn't changed hands since at least 1996, when smog test results began being published.

Hope it's still out there. I'm hungry for some pizza.

Here's one of the screenshots I brightened up... the car was Diamond Silver Metallic, a color which was first offered for 1978 and for several years afterwards.

Just out of curiosity, how do we know this is a 1979 as previously claimed? Are there any telltale visual signs?
