Question: This green & yellow 1958 Ford Custom 300 taxi has something I've seen before on older taxis: The rear vertical window frame post, on the rear doors, has a heavy metal strip attached tot it. ("George Kaplan" is holding his right hand on it in this picture) Anyone know what is the purpose of this thing? The red & white car does not have it... ![]() |

Could it be a warning lamp, for warning the rear traffic? |

Maybe... but looks like a solid metal strip... |

Hi wekee, did you ever find the answer to your question, I watched North by North west recently and like you noticed added metal piece to rear door window frame I have searched every where and cannot find an answer. Unsure if it is fitted to both sides. regards robsie. |

Never seen such a thing before. Theory, though. Perhaps the upper rear door opening was enlarged to make it easier for taxi passengers to get in and out and the extra door panel was a filler to bridge the gap so a whole new door would not have to be designed. Since passengers generally load on the curb (right) side, I would guess the left side rear door would not have this feature. Plausible? |
