The man on the right with the cowboy hat was J.C. Agajanian, a well known Los Angeles area racing promoter who owned Ascot park, a dirt racing track located in Gardena, CA, near when the film was shot. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascot_Park,_California & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_J.C._Agajanian |

If anything, then it is a Midget racer and since it was raced at Ascot Park, it's built to USAC rules. So USAC Midget and J.C. Agajanian? Agajanian usually used the number 98 for his cars, but he also used number 71 when he campaigned two cars in a race. Thus it is safe to say that this is the #71 Agajanian USAC Midget and the driver appears to be none other than Mel Kenyon. http://melkenyon.tripod.com/artemis-mel-indy-386x561.jpg The guy looking on at the far right is Sprint Car champion Gary Patterson. This appears to be footage from the actual 1973 Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ascot Park, weaved into the movie. J.C. Agajanian and Parnelli Jones were close friends, and Toby Halicki was friendly with Jones, so he might have also been friendly with Agajanian. Both men appear in the movie as themselves. -- Last edit: 2014-12-30 22:08:06 |
