If you ever will come into a real British Fish'n Chip-shop, your hunger will be gone immediately. Even before you'll notice this Scottish speciality http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-fried_Mars_bar |

@ingo - real British Fish'n Chip-shops are absolutely superb - the problem is the rest of them which can be absolute pants. The best ones are usually in coastal towns with harbours so the fish is fresh - lots around Scotland, but England and Wales have them too. Keep an open mind on your next visit. |

We've made one try in 2001 in Southern Scotland (in Ayrshire, I think) - and it was terrible. Not only because it was expensive and all stuff deep frozen cheap junk. The bad food-quality is quite usual here, too. The ambiente was worst, too. In Germany you cannot find such unkind made grill-takeaways (naked white walls, neonlights, nothing else than the deep fat friers and the deep frozen food for that, without any other food or even decoration for it), neither in the classic German "Imbiss", not in the Greek Gyros-grills or the Turkish or Lebanese Döner Kebab-restaurants. All of them are like here: http://www.doener-express-bringdienst.de/images/theke2_450.jpg This morgue-stylish ambiente we've only seen in the UK (not only one time). Although the food is often worse, too, also in Belgium and Holland the well-known frituurs/friteries have little bit optical style Link to "officialfrenchfries.com" And I hate vinegar, especially on fries. And Brown Sauce is not much better there. So annother reason to be very careful with fast food in Britain... -- Last edit: 2011-10-22 01:18:55 |

All the good fish'n'chip shops I know concentrate on the fish - they're not general deep fry shops with a wide choice of other things. And most fish landing is done Monday-Friday, so fish served on Sunday or Monday will not be as fresh. A good fishmonger does not open on Mondays. |
