bumpers and lack of flares indicate 1980-82 curiously the mirror housings are painted body color which didn't become standard on the base cars until 1991

I think this is the exact same car /vehicle.php?id=76579

These wheels are off of something much newer (Jetta or New Beetle, perhaps?)

Yes, the same car - but it got the windscreen back. :)

You're right, wheels and hubcaps are from a newer VW (also the wheel-size seems not original), the mirrors either.

Some freaks are pimping their Golf/Rabbit Convertible to a newer version, some to an older. Recently I saw a late-80ies Golf Cabriolet in my village, which had the 1974-77 chrome bumpers and the 1974/75 chrome mirrors.

Btw.these early Golf-parts are are rare collectibles and the freaks are paying much money for it. I've made some money, too, with these parts. My Swedish friend has picked the stuff from junkyards (as we had talked about in the forum, Swedish junkyards are/were the best in Europe) and I've sold them on eBay.
@atom: a seriously meant tip: maybe you'll have a chance to check the yards around you. A good possibility to make a bit money. ;)

Maybe the Convertible freaks should just swap cars instead of pimping older ones to look newer and newer ones to look older. :)
