i wonder...this could be called the first volkswagen suv? or must be the volkswagen iltis? |
◊ 2006-12-05 12:27 |
I'm pretty sure the Typ 181 came before the Iltis. And then there's the Kuebelwagen from the Second World War. |

The type 181 is the kubelwagon. |

No, Kübelwagen is Typ 82. The Typ 181 is Kurierwagen, sold as Thing in USA. |

The Typ 181 is the Safari or the Thing(its american version), The Iltis is the Typ 183, the Iltis appeared several years after the 181. Based on the DKW Munga. |

Iltis appeared in 1978. The 82 Kubelwagen was never produced as a Sport Utility Vehicle since it was only meant for military use. Yes, it is considered the first SUV made by Volkswagen and for years it was considered the last Phaeton (four door covertible) untill other were reintroduced in the market such as the new Jeep. |

This is wrong. The Munga has nothing to do with the Iltis and the 181, too. The Iltis is technicially based on the Golf I, chassis and body are unique. The 181 is based on the Karmann Ghia [Typ34], resp. both cars have the same platform. |

If you think this is wrong, please take a look to the link below: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_Iltis |

@igna: this sentence in the Wiki-article "Der Iltis wurde von der Audi NSU Auto Union AG entwickelt und war Ersatz für den DKW Munga" means: "The Iltis was developed by the Audi NSU Auto Union AG and has replaced the DKW Munga" "Ersatz für..." means "replacement for...", not "based on..." |

1973 model year only. Mexican assembled for USA market. |

Well, Ingo. If the concept is abuot mechanic specifications you are right, I talked about the concept. For example the Bus T4 is based on the T3 as a commercial concept, eventhough it is a totally different car from a Technical point of view. |

If you talk only about the concept, then http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath_Jagdwagen_Typ_31 and http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_597 should not be forgotten. On the other side of The Wall they had one, too: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horch_P2M and http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horch_P3 |

I'm on the hunt for this original orange VW THING car. The actual one used in the original John Carpenter movie THE FOG. If anyone on the production crew has any idea where this car ended up please let me know at trueromancefest@live.com Thank you! -- Last edit: 2019-01-18 02:10:50 |
