Is that two-tone color or faux woodgrain? Nice find in our market ![]() |

It's wood grain. |

Opel Ascona A Voyage |

1971 Opel 1900 Wagon in the US I guess? |
◊ 2009-11-06 14:56 |
Sorry Ralph, it's no Ascona. It's a Buick Opel, originally a Kadett B Caravan with the front of the 1968 "Olympia"-edition. |

wasn't this just sold simply as Buick/Opel or Opel by Buick here? |
◊ 2009-11-06 15:46 |
Make: 'Opel' sold by Buick (or GM's 'Buick-Opel' dealers). |
◊ 2009-11-06 15:57 |
ah okay, Opel stopped selling cars in the US 6 years before I was born ![]() |

You're right, Ingo. These were sold as Opel Kadett in USA as well. Maybe they used a special name for the 'woody'?![]() |

Did it really had wood-veneer on the side or was it just a sticker? |
-- ◊ 2009-11-08 14:23 |
It's not wood, it's just brown paint. |
◊ 2009-11-08 17:11 |
It would be a sticker if it's anything at all other than brown paint. |

I saw an old magazine ad online referring to a vehicle just like this as an "Opel Kadette Caravan." Is that what this would be? |
◊ 2009-11-10 09:26 |
Yes, it is an Opel Kadett (without "e") Caravan, to be exact a Kadett B. Caravan is the name for Opel-wagons, |

Other US models on the site are listed as "Deluxe Wagon" |

I am also curious to know what these are officially called as well. I have a 1958 Buick Magazine Advertisement that states: "The unique OPEL - The Imported car made by General Motors in Germany - can now be ordered in Sedan and Caravan Wagon models through authorized Buick dealers" So I am now wondering if they did call them "Caravan Wagons" |
◊ 2010-06-25 23:35 |
In 1958 there was no Kadett... Opel built the Rekord [P], and these as well were sold in the USA. |

@tonkaTRACKER: In Germany Opel names their Wagon-versions usually "Caravan". Volkswagen-Wagons are "Variant", Ford's "Turnier", Skoda "Combi" (as Borgward did, too). "Kombi" is the common term for Wagon's in the daily speech - but not always. Some people, who are used to drive VW since a long time, are saying "Variant" to the Wagon-versions of other brands, too. |

@Dynamike @ingo Yes I know about the Wagon names in other countries but I was wondering if Buick marketed the Opel Wagons as Caravan Wagons here in the US as well, maybe to make them sound more European. -- Last edit: 2010-06-26 00:29:46 |

The term "Caravan" for a Wagon was an Opel-idea, an Anglizism-word in the meaning of "This Car is a Van" (because it has so much space). Btw. "Caravan" has annother meaning in German. It's a word for a camping-trailer. "Caravaning" is the hobby to travel around with a camping-trailer. -- Last edit: 2010-06-26 00:14:49 |
