I think this car actually might be the Mercury version (whatever is was...I can't remember?) of the Ford Granada or Fairmont. I'm not positive, but I think this is a Mercury and not a Ford. I'm not sure but I think that I can see the Mercury emblem as the little hood ornament. I have the complete "Miami Vice" series on DVD and this car and clips are from the second season 2-hour premiere "The Prodigal Son." I'll have to watch that again and see if I can get a better view of this car. -- Last edit: 2008-04-21 23:28:19 |

It may be a Granada...but it really looks more like a Mercury from that time, than a Ford. Mercury is a "fancier" division out of Ford Motor Comapny and many of both models of the cars look alike or have similarities...but usually you can still tell the differences--the Mercury usually being a little more fancy. If it is a Mercury, it's not a Cougar (Cougar is the Mercury version of the Ford Thunderbird). It's whatever the Mercury version of the Ford Granada was. But then again...it does kind of look like a Granada?? I don't know!! LOL! -- Last edit: 2008-04-22 19:08:53 |

I find Wikipedia to be useful for figuring out those "related" vehicles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Granada_%28North_America%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Monarch |

The Mercury Cougar hasn't always been the twin of the Ford Thunderbird. The original Cougar was a more luxurious Ford Mustang, and my 1974 Cougar is closely related to the Ford Torino. I'm well aware of Mercury's exalted position in the Ford lineup. In 1981-1982, in addition to the Cougar coupe (which was a twin of the Thunderbird) there was also a Cougar sedan that was the twin of the Ford Granada and in 1982 there was even a Cougar wagon (there was also a Cougar sedan from 1977-1979, but that's another story). I didn't chose the name "CougarTim" because I like older women. ![]() A 1981 Ford Granada: http://www.americangranada.com/owners/toms_81_granada-1.jpg A 1982 Mercury Cougar wagon: http://www.americangranada.com/owners/rolands_82_cougar-2.jpg |

CougarTim: Do you think sedan and stations wagon versions are a stain on the storied Cougar's history? ![]() |

That's a good question. On the one hand, I think they should never have applied the Cougar name to sedans and station wagons in the first place. On the other hand, what's been done cannot be undone, and I admit that I wouldn't mind driving a Cougar sedan some day. Cougar sedans and wagons are pretty rare these days, and the Cougar name probably makes them more interesting than if they'd been called Montego or Monarch. The 1977 Cougar Villager is today a very desirable car to a very limited group of enthusiasts because it's so rare. I don't know if I'd call them a stain, but at the very least the sedans and wagons added an interesting story to the Cougar's history.
