What I don't understand why this Ranchero, the Malibu or the DeVille don't come alive. Same with that boat they secape in. And yet the Beatle, the three junkies (Plymouth, Mustang and the other one) come alive. |

The boat that the Dixie Boy crew escaped in was a sailboat, and not a machine, so it was supposedly safe. Now that's not to say that some of those powerboats in the dock couldn't come after them, or some oil tankers, freighters, destroyers, etc, once they got out into open water! As for why some vehicles didn't come alive, they did allude to this in the movie, when Dirk was riding his bike through the neighborhood and occasionally you'd hear parts of radio broadcasts. One announcer said something like "some machines seem to be coming alive more slowly than others" In the original short story that Maximum Overdrive was based on, "Trucks", it was just the trucks that came alive. No cars, household appliances, soda machines, video games, etc. The story didn't delve deeply enough though to define WHICH trucks would come alive. Would a pickup truck? How about a Chevy LUV? Or if the story were written today, what about crossovers like a PT Cruiser or HHR? I do seem to recall a step-van was one of the "villains" in that story, so it wasn't just limited to big rigs like semis and dumptrucks. And towards the end, one of the characters theorized that heavy equipment, like earthmovers, bulldozers, road pavers, etc might be in on it, he also noticed two planes flying overhead, leaving contrails, and thinking "I wish I could believe that there are people on board" |
