convoyduel ◊ 2009-08-27 08:38	That truck is a '66 to '72 model Mack R600 model, likely (but not certain) an R685ST, where R6 is the family, 85 is the engine code, S means tandem and T means tractor. Unless you have the VIN number, you are not going to know the exact year on this. The cab is centered. The U and DM model cab was offset flush with the driver's side edge of the hood fender. Due to the mounting arrangement of the air cleaner against the offset cab, the U/DM model air cleaner bodies were not visible from the front, hidden by the tall main part hood/grille. U/DM models had the passenger side mirror assemblies mounted to the air cleaner instead of the cab, due to the long offset. The early R models (and U models) came with an air cleaner with two small side-by-side air intakes to the hood (as shown). Although not required, the taller air intake pipe was a popular choice and pushed by Mack to minimize dust and water spray from the front wheels. Several versions of the taller intake pipe remained available through the end of the R model family production in 2005.
