670 BYC was Somerset, June-July 58. Black hood is August 63+, no reversers and wide gap between grille and sidelights so before 67/68.

Only 125 miles on the clock, and 100 mph - I thought in those days you had to treat new things gently for the first '000 miles or so so the engines didn't explode, with a "Running In - Please Pass" sticker in the back window.

100 mph on a B of that era is over 4,000 rpm, even in overdrive. It seems a trifle foolhardy to be pushing things that hard with a stone cold engine showing zero oil pressure, irrespective of its run in state. Presumably this dashboard is a creation, and nobody mentioned to the geeky simpletons who did it that the temperature and oil pressure gauges do tend to show a reading occasionally. The five bearing 1800cc “B” series engine in the MG is fairly bombproof, but not that much!

My dads policy was mainly to buy fairly new, but used cars, but we did buy a Morris Cowley new in October 1955, the engine was religiously run in according to the handbook, not over 30mph for the first 500 miles, and a very slow progression up to normal use after about six months. It turned out to be a complete waste of time, as the car was so gutless with the 1200cc engine, that dad had a 1500cc Oxford engine fitted in it after about 1 year and the process began again.

Cowley 1200: naught to sixty in 31.5 seconds.
Cowley 1500: naught to sixty in 24.5 seconds.
Clearly worth it. ;)

Cowley 1200 with 1500 engine was quicker still, apparently, to 60 because of the lower gearing for the 1200 engine not being changed. It wasn’t any faster in top speed (70mph if you were very lucky) as the revs still ran out. The Cowley also had cheaper narrower tyres than the Oxford which helped in a straight line by reducing the rolling resistance.
