After thinking through all sorts of 1930s British sporting car builders, from AC to Whitlock, I glanced at the numberplate, which I had previously discounted as too small to deserve attention. Could it possibly be “MG” and 4 numbers?

Whilst, according to Mr. Newall, it is not true that all of the MG series was reserved for University Motors, “MG contained many MG cars”, so, in the absence of evidence from the subject picture, it may be an MG. The series ran from March 1930 to March 1949, covering much change in design. (No, I haven’t misread or mis-typed, 19 years).

Then again it might not be.

I would say this is a 1947 MG TC (without the spare wheel?) the white dot at the bottom of the left rear fender is probably the number plate...

The numberplate is across the centre of the car under the boot/petrol tank. The white blob is most likely a GB plate, and the car looks too big to be a TC, when compared with the Ford Zodiac alongside it.
British numberplates at this time were invariably black, with white or silver grey digits.

...you're right. THE MGs are too small. After a long search ;) it may be a Lagonda M45: the design looks great; the wheelbase is wide but the rear wings do not have the same design ...see here picture n°19 here : Link to "www.automania.be"
or may be a Lagonda Rapier ? https://classiccarcatalogue.com/LAGONDA_1935.html
If that's the case, it's pretty rare! :)
