The made-in-Israel tag proved an interesting chase. Info from here - "In September 1960 Auto-Stock, the then BMW importer, started sales of the 700 model in Israel. The elegant car won immediate success, and 376 units were retailed in 1961, an impressive figure. Maybe as a result of the search for his Popular car’s power source, Illin provides in August 1961 the inter-ministerial vehicle committee with a proposal for the assembly of BMW 700." It then goes all pear-shaped after various shenanigans ..... "That was the end of the short BMW-Illin affair. The four CKD kits imported in 1961 were stored till March 1963. Only then it was decided to assemble them, and market them locally. None survived.". Illin gave up on BMW and switched focus to Hino to get the Contessa assembly contract. And according to wiki BMW stayed in the ring and tried to sell the 700 rights and tooling to Israel after Munich production ended in 65. |

Hmm, interesting. I've read somewhere (can't remember where, at the moment) that they assembled these Luxus models in small numbers in Israel, but the number was never specified. However, if it is just 4 as explained in your link, then the "Built in IL" tag is probably not entirely correct. I mean, it could be one of those 4 locally-built models, but what are the chances.. -- Last edit: 2020-10-30 02:29:16 |

Made-for-IL would be a useful marker in the circs. |
