Clearly meant to be the usual 1990 Rover Mini Cooper which Japanese cartoons seem to fixate on, and some neat detail such as side indicators and rear fog. But wrong mirrors and naff wheels. |

IRC Mini enthusiasts in Japan like to customise their cars. Back in the 1980s there was a cottage industry of customising buying used Minis, customising them to look like 1960s models and exporting them to Japan for a tidy profit. |

Yes - they swept up loads of stuff - usually small BMC things like Minis and posh ADO16s like VdP/MG/Riley (though not for some unknown reason Allegros or Marinas), also some fast small Fords - Escort Twin Cams, Cortina 1600E. Any RHD market was fair game, so also Aus and NZ. Some UK firms such as Broadspeed hoovered up lots of grotty minis (Coopers, estates, vans, Clubmen, Elfs, Hornets etc), rebuilt and upgraded them and made a fair bit of dosh. It even got to thee stage that when Rover Japan introduced the 1990 Mini Cooper as the first official Mini sales in J for 20+ years, there was a demand from Japanese owners of 70s and 80s privately imported Minis and ADO16s for modern tweaks such as air-con or power steering, so Rover Japan created official reverse-engineering upgrades for these retro-enthusiasts. |
