When it crashes it transforms into 1981-85 Chevrolet Impala. www.imcdb.org/vehicle_10859-Chevrolet-Step-Van.html |

Not sure that it is supposed to be the same car, since there were lots of police cars involved... |

This is a technique used in most movies. The hero car you see here is a 1986-1990 Caprice. For wreck scenes, coordinators will switch the hero car with an older model, the stunt car, in this case, the 1980-85 Impala. They both look almost the same, except for the lights, and grille. |

In this case it is not the hero car, only one of the police car used in the chase, there are several similar models in the movie. The important cars were newer models. |

Wait, this car's an '86 isn't it? It has four-eyes rather than the composite headlights. |

Actually, the four eyes were vinyl strips applied to make it look like a 1986. The headlights look like composites, and they don't recess into the panel like those of a 1986. The Newport Beach Police didn't get Caprices until 1988. |

![]() ![]() When it rolls over it changes indeed into a Chevrolet Impala. |

The headlights have a strip of PVC or gaffers tape 2 make it resemble a 1986 model which has 4 headlights - the 86s also had the amber side markers... |
