Looks like Finland was another country where Taunus and Cortinas were sold alongside each other. |

Yes - and France and Italy definite for Mk1 Cortina with high sales alongside early 12M but not apparently Mk2 Cortina onwards in any quantity. A special made-for-Greece 1100cc Mk2 existed, and I think we have some Turkish location Cortinas (but not assembled there). I haven't checked individually in each case but Norway, Sweden, Denmark seem to have had Mk1-3 Cortinas against the various Taunuses. Plus permutations outside Europe for local assembly of both ranges - ZA (with sales into eg Kenya), Philippines, Korea (by Hyundai), Vietnam, maybe Costa Rica and/or other Carribean. Cortina Mk1&2 into USA and Mk1-3 into Canada and Japan but these seem to have been Taunus-free zones by then (although this is not totally watertight - we have a couple of US entries). Other queries are Yugoslavia, Israel, Cyprus, Malta, other Indonesian countries .... Would be interesting one day to chart everything we know. -- Last edit: 2012-02-06 01:39:15 |

Audi makes sense, as we first were offered the brand in the 1970 model year... but NSU ~ is odd. they were offered here from either '59 or '60 straight up through the publication date of the book. VERY few of them, but here nonetheless. |

@ingo - thanks - some very interesting references, and some unexpected mentions (Anglias in 1967, Mini 850, Minxes). Interesting names-for-US in some cases as well. I suspect that availability may have been more theoretical than actual in some cases - similar scenarios to some references in Glass's guides 1950s-70s for some makes/models in UK. Lotus Cortina references different from what I've read elsewhere that some were sold in 65 (including a few now back in UK) but withdrawn for 66, but confirms another strand that no Mk2 LCs were sold in US, only Mk1. No doubt we'll come back to this list as needed. Edit: and I've seen other figures that Cortina US sales for all types in 1968 were 35,000. -- Last edit: 2012-02-08 13:54:23 |

Ah, yes, Wiki says, that the -disgusting: http://www.ak-autoteile.de/Bilder/neu/Audi%20Super%2090%20USA.jpg - US-export model of the [F103] appeared in 1969: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_F103 This one /vehicle.php?id=207826 -still not listed - looks for me like a very early one (colour, rims), but it cannot be older than 1969 according Wiki. |

@dsl: today I had the 1968' "Schwacke"-list in my hands (nowadays http://www.schwacke.de/ , back then a small booklet). It's the list of used-car-prices, very important for car-dealerships and insurance companies. Do you know, what I've found in the quotations? Very surprising things! ![]() - Hillman Imp - Hillman Minx - Hillman Super Minx - Sunbeam Rapier - Sunbeam Avenger - Vauxhall Viva - Ford Consul Capri They all had the remark "import stopped before 1.1.1968", but price-informations. Although this doesn't say anything, if or how many cars were really imported, but it proves, that there was an official import. I only read in it, but haven't bought it, because I thought, the asked 10 € were too much. Stupid me - because at the same dealer I could haggle the price for an original K 70-spare-parts-catalogue from 60 € to 33 € and for a small 1950ies Wartburg-flower vase from 10€ to 7€. Anyways, the guy is only one time per year on a market and only there, so next year I could be lucky And I will visit him for sure, because he will bring some NOS-parts for me. |

Pleased to see that - after all - Germany did have the opportunity to enjoy the finer things in life. But Avenger only launched in Jan 70 - do you mean Alpine? All the Hillmans would have been before mid-66, otherwise called Sunbeam (and therefore before Chrysler takeover so no Rootes links into Simca dealerships would have existed). In a similar theme but different context, I recently found a book listing all cars available in UK after WW2 with the following paragraph: "CARS FROM NORTH AMERICA: Except in isolated cases, it has not been possible to give details of North American cars price-listed in the UK since 1945. In many cases, cars were listed but not stocked, the choice of engines, transmission and body options was enormous, and deliveries were only made against special orders. Cars seen at British Motor Shows and subsequently listed were often only sold in ones and twos - and then not always in the specifications listed in British magazines at the time. Many .... were originally imported for use by North American government departments, businesses, individuals, and military service personnel. Although they were often registered in the UK, then sold on to British buyers in due course, in many cases these models and derivatives were not even price-listed as being for sale in the UK". - end of quote. Comments: [1] although written for UK, I guess it could be just as relevant for many other European countries and elsewhere [2] I read 'North American' as not just US but also Canadian - a smaller element than US but still relevant. |

Yes, sorry, Alpine, not Avenger. Hillman and Sunbeam were the only brands, listed under chapter Rootes. The same thing, you have quoted may have fit here, too. That these cars were listed, but in fact were never imported. Same, if you have a look in the "autokatalog"-issues. For many models you'll find pricemarks and importer-adresses, but this doesn't mean, that they are really sold, or that there exists a ABE (our "Vehicle Type Approval") for that specific model. I'm waiting for the confirmation from the specialist, but it seems, that this had happen for the "Jesche-Wolga" ( /movie.php?id=372183 ), too. |

I nearly added a 3rd comment that ^^ could apply to some other countries' cars in UK, because I was thinking of Volga as well. Glass's says Volga was available here in 50s and 60s - as discussed before - plus other Iron Curtain cars (Zundapp, Zaphrozets, Syrena) and they did exhibit at motor shows here. Ditto Opels in 50s and early 60s, and as we've discussed before Ford Taunus. The big test of whether any of these efforts were serious would have been whether RHD versions were offered. -- Last edit: 2012-03-03 22:35:28 |
