Israeli defence Force (IDF) M50/M51 155mm "SuperSherman"..sometimes known as "Isherman"...basically redundant ex WW2 US M4A3E8 Sherman tanks sold as surplus to the IDF who removed the original main guns and replaced them with French 105mm guns, they also had revised stowage details and other minor modifications..other IDF conversions on the same chassis include a fully enclosed ambulance/APC, a self propelled 155mm howitzer with a Finnish gun designed by Tampella and a self propelled 160mm mortar (similar in appearance to a WW2 Sexton spg but fully enclosed), again with Finnish mortar designed by tampella. In all cases the modifications/conversions of the old M4A38 basic tank was carried out in Israel...the 105mm French gun for the SuperSherman was french whereas the two Finnish armaments for the mortar and howitzer were produced under license by Soltam in Israel...the IDF carried out similar conversions to those mentioned on the British centurion hull, and the American M47,M48 and M60 hulls. -- Last edit: 2009-09-16 20:12:07 |

M4A3 series seem all to have been built by Detroit Arsenal........list it as a Detroit Arsenal M4A3E8, model origin usa, used by Israel....as its an exclusive IDF conversion and was never exported. |

It is true that the Germans used to capture Shermans, but this? Using a post-WWII variant? Jeez. |

Yes, captured vehicles were used. But definetely not post-WWII-versions. Between 1945 and 1955 there was no German military. I don't know, if some Shermans came to the 1955 founded Bundeswehr. Maybe, because, before own products were developed, US-stuff was used, maybe British, too. |

This sherman tank is not an ex M4A3 American. This tank is an Ex-M4A1 you can tell because the upper hull is a cast hull. The suspension system is also not Israeli, its American known as the Hvss and Sherman that had this suspension system were known as Easy Eights. Thus this Sherman was a M4-A1 Easy Eight. The Israelis were smart they converted from a twin Gasoline Engines to Diesel engines, gasoline explodes, diesel burns, plus better performance. During the war the U.S. Government was pressured in to up- gunning the Sherman's and they brought out the 76 mm gun which was a vast improvement over the M3 75 mm gun/howitzer that most shermans were armed with, but the gun was still inferior to the Panther's Kwk 42 L/71 75 mm gun and the Tiger I L/56 88 mm gun. The British were smarter they had captured a Panther tank took it back and copied the Kwk 42 L/71 and modified it and produced the out standing 17 pounder the projectiles weighed 17 pounds it two was around a 76.2 mm but was vastly superior to the U.S. 76 mm gun and was equal in performance to the Panther and Tiger I's main guns, and they could knock the German armor out at normal combat ranges. Our Government's relationship with the Brits was strained by this time and they refused to adopt the 17 pounder and as my uncle said we lost a lot of good guys because you had hacks that had a bug up you know where. After the war the French had the German sector were the german 75 gun was produced and they made an even better copy, the M50 Shermans are armed with this gun. and they should have at least used the M50 in this movie instead of the M51 with its 105 mm gun. |
