Mmmmh... No, I'd prefer listing it as MacNeillie rather than Startins and I tell you why: Thomas Startin Ltd. of Birmingham, a long-time Austin/ Rover dealer and manufacturer of hearse bodies (since the 1840s), had been taken over by S. MacNeillie & Son Limited of Walsall, England, in 1995. The Rover hearses are a result of combined knowledge by Startins and MacNeillie and were entirely built in Walsall. While the traditional name Startins had initially been used in advertising along the MacNeillie brand (who wouldn't do it? Coleman Milne also kept the Woodall Nicholson brand alive), it was just the icing on the cake.

My limited knowledge is that MacNeillie's were a new outfit and more concerned with stretched Rover 800s, including 6-doors, for civic/mayoral use which then widened into funeral use as mourners taxis. Startins Austin links dated back to 1920s and maybe earlier - they built the first Austin Seven vans before Longbridge started building them, and did lots of Austin-approved special bodies (ambulances, hearses, whatever) through into the Rover era. So MacNeillie acquired the hearse lineage with their 1995 buy-out, rather than bringing it to the table.

My general hunch is it's more useful to keep things together when we can. We don't seem to have any other Rover [R17] or previous gen [XX] hearses, so there would be no fragmentation from any existing stock, although we do however have a fair-sized Startin(s) family compared to a solitary labelled MacNeillie, a 2007 Merc Sprinter ambulance so not a strong link.

That said, you're the hearse supremo so I'll leave the heavy burden of such decisions to your wisdom and judgement.

I fully agree about keeping things together if possible, but on the other hand it's a good thing that we celebrate diversity (wasn't that an ESC slogan?) and gather a wide range of (hearse-) coachbuilders on the site - as we are slowly becoming the biggest online museum for funeral vehicles in the world, even though not on purpose.

This matter is not as bad as Collins butchering the Miller-Meteor name, but I don't think I can sleep if we keep this a Startins hearse... "Startins" is more of a model name here, Startins are still in business and MacNeillie introduced their first hearses that way, so I suggest we list these as "Startins by MacNeillie", just like we listed the Collins rip-off.

:king: An elegant solution - enables either name to be searched. Sleep well.
