W108, probably 280SE. Seems to have the 3.5 or even 4.5 badge on the right side of the trunklid. |

To my eyes there's not enough chrome around the windows to qualify as a [W 109] 300 SEL of some sort. My guess is therefore on a [W 108] with a V8 engine, hence the additional designation number on the boot lid. The question is whether it's a 3.5 litre or 4.5 litre V8. As far as I've read, the 3.5 litre V8 wasn't a huge success in the USA as exhaust regulation killed most of the horse power advantage compare with the 280 S/SE straight six. Hence there was no better acceleration for the difference in cost between the models. Because of that, Mercedes made a bigger 4.5 litre V8, which got the power output the 3.5 litre should have had. That proved to be a success and plenty 4.5 were sold in the USA, but almost non in the rest of the world. I believe this is (not unlikely) a 1971-72 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 4.5. |
