However as you pointed out it has the Austin badge at the rear and I recognised the cab roof and doors, there is little chance I think that it was based on a saloon car chassis. The only other Austin of this size from 1947 was the later three-way K8 and its not that. I guess its possible it was a refurbished wartime vehicle because of sales restrictions on new vehicles for anything other than export. If it really was a police or prison van those restrictions may not have applied.
