All E38 7-Series left the factory with rear open differentials, so BMW used electronic traction control (ETC) to "simulate" a rear limited-slip differential by ABS braking the slipping wheel or wheels to transfer torque. All vehicles pretty much have ETC or TCS now, but it was still considered new technology during the 90's. BMW first used it on the E32 7-Series during the late-80s.
