Out of curiosity - can't be earlier, for example 1955, branded as Utility, not Chevrolet/GMC?

Brochure from 1955 --> Link to "www.amazon.com"

Agreement with Chevrolet/GMC was signed in 1957.

From the documents I found, 1952 for GMC (1), but 1958 only for Chevrolet:

(1952 GMC brochure // 1958 Chevrolet brochure)

"The Utility" (on the cover of the linked 1955 brochure), "Order from your GMC dealer" or "New from Chevrolet": in all cases, I read it as being sold directly as GM models, not as a separate make.
_____

1: Sold as P-Series from 1958 onwards. The Value Van name appeared only for the 1964 model (equivalent of the Chevrolet Step-Van King).

But:

"During the early 50s, they marketed their own line of step vans under the Utility brand. The step vans were manufactured by Utility Truck Distributors Inc. of Union City, as division of Union City Body Co. The firm continued to offer forward-control aluminum step van bodies for Ford, Dodge, GMC, and Chevrolet chassis until 1957 when an exclusive agreement was signed with Chevrolet and GMC Truck & Coach division."

And - same body was available for the Ford chassis:

Also - Package wagon for the chassis GMC FP-152:

Link to "www.autopaper.com"

This body was sold exclusively for GMC chassis, but under Utility make, not GMC:

For me, as long as there is a make badge on or above the grille, there's no need to split hairs. When the basis is easily identifiable like for these Utility vans, the coachbuilder should appear only in the extra-info field, like for buses. And only when sure of a pre-1958 model, for GMC vans.
