It looks (although image is low quality) like it has a chrome stripe along the side and possibly the chunkier Daimler boot lid handle (although here I'm kind of guessing because it's very pixelly) Could you give us a view of the front, so we can see if it has the fluted Daimler grille? -- Last edit: 2011-11-29 23:42:19 |

Where does 1989 come from? If it's because of the two other Sovereign V12's on this site, they are 1989 because of their numberplates, not because that's the start year for Sovereign V12. |

With G-MANN's research in mind, I propose: 1984-mid-85: Sovereign HE (remember there were no Jaguar Sovereigns before 1984). Mid-85-Late-85 only: Sovereign (as script) V12 (though we have to hope that our June 85 model isn't a stockpiled late registration). MY1986-89: Sovereign (as plaque) V12 1990-92: V12 badge only. Where does the standard XJ12 fit in though? Was this offered alongside the Sovereign H.E./V12 etc, or was it merged with the Sovereign line in '84 when the Sovereign was changed from Daimler to Jaguar? And what do the chrome strips mean? 1990+ V12? |

Interesting stuff. We get so close to something useful and then it begins to crumble at the edges. As for plaque badges (but not V12 related) /vehicle_482308-Jaguar-XJ6-Series-III-1986.html is interesting - registered 01-01-86 so days before my suggested start of plaque badges, it has non-plaque (hoorah!). So best guess at the moment could be that V12 (under whatever name) got plaque in late 85 a few months before lesser models OR V12 and Sovereigns got plaque in late 85 a few months before normal XJ6. But plaque seems safe for everything made after Jan 86, and probably for everything we'd call 86my onwards. |

On wikipedia it says in late 83 (84 model year) when Sovereign switched from Daimler to Jaguar, the XJ12 name stopped and became Sovereign H.E./V12. I think 83-84 ones should be named 'Sovereign H.E.' and 85+ 'Sovereign V12'. Or we could simplify it and just use Sovereign V12. Not that many crop up anyway. -- Last edit: 2012-11-22 02:29:58 |

I've changed /vehicle_7546-Jaguar-Sovereign-V12-Series-III-1986.html and /vehicle_178113-Jaguar-Sovereign-V12-Series-III-1988.html from XJ12 to Sovereign V12 as they are in the correct year range for that. We do seem to have culled our S3 XJ12s though, especially considering that one or two that remain are in the very dodgy situation of being US market specimens, something most sources agree don't exist. |

As for Sandie's questions: Glass's has clear single strand evolution for 12 cyl Jag (have missed out early S1/2 complications of swb/lwb transition and coupe). - Introduced July 72 as XJ12 (in S1 era), - carried straight through into S2 (Oct 73), - became XJ5.3 in May 75 when fuel injection fitted, - carried straight through into S3 (March 79), - became XJ5.3 HE July 81 (for engine revision - and standard headlamp wash wipe!!! - I missed this reference before, but Jan 86 date still applies for 6 cyl Sovereigns as standard fit, not mentioned for basic XJ6) - stopped Oct 83. - Sept 83 Sovereign HE launched, - became Jaguar 5.3 V12 (without Sovereign) in Sept 89, - stopped June 92. Seems fairly clear cut sequence, but photo evidence is merging some boundaries. However - there is only one sequence - no XJ12/XJ5.3/Sovereigns in parallel. Chrome strips confusing until a penny dropped. In UK terms they mean Daimler VdP (both 6 and 12 versions offered) but for all the German examples, Daimler was probably excluded for naming reasons, so my guess is German Daimlers renamed Jaguar VdP as US system (so a Daimler VdP becomes Jaguar VdP VDP??). So we have quite a few German Jag grilles with chrome strips, but they don't have to be 90+ V12 only - just mid 80s+ Daimler VdP 6 and 12 equivalents. Any local info useful. |

Yes, but it was a plate suffix change point for the start of the next year, so everyone liked to have the newest plate. Cars were sold in Dec with the new registration and registered and taxed from Jan 1 - so people could not legally use them until Jan 1. Garages would open on Jan 1 for people to collect their shiny new delights, and then they'd drive round showing off to their neighbours. These things mattered in English suburbia, and there is still a slight resale advantage for a January registration over the preceding Nov/Dec, despite the plate change months now being March and September. |
