I am reluctant to say something, but here it goes: Seems to be the 1968 Ford full size to me. Curiously, the rear sidemarker seems to be taped out ![]() |

1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Four Door Sedan [54A] But where on earth is the side marker light? |

rjluna2 I have been wanting to ask you about sidemarkers, when did they become law in the US? I thought it was 1968 for all vehicles but is this true for light trucks as well? I know Jeep didn't add them until the 1969 model year. |

And I believe the "side markers" on '68 and '69 Checkers were just reflectors. They didn't get true side markers until 1970. |

Yes, tonkatracker, the mandatory sidemarker was introduced in all 1968 USA made cars. Then the US government adopted stronger sidemarker ruling that includes both reflectors and lighting equipment starting 1970 model years sold in USA market. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Motor_Vehicle_Safety_Standard_108 Link to "en.wikipedia.org" As we discussed at /vehicle_246328-Rover-2000-TC-P6-1966.html |

yes but I am asking if the rule was different for light trucks, (like the CHMSL rule for instance) I know that no Jeeps got Sidemarker lights or reflectors until the 1969 model year. |

Tonkatracker, probably belongs to the truck category by the USA government definition. Perhaps that the US government has different set of ruling, but I am not sure ![]() ![]() For example, most pickup trucks and SUV sold in USA market didn't get the rear CHMSL until 1994 model year. |

I'm wondering then how Checker avoided the requirements for '68 and '69? Perhaps because the company was so small/got a temporary waiver? |

I don't have the answer on the sidemarker for the Checker marquee ![]() |

According to your post above, the Checker got reflectors for 68 and 69, which is within regulations. -- Last edit: 2011-10-20 21:09:47 |

Yes, the government requirement contains the wording of either reflectors or lighted sidemarker until the 1970 sidemarker requirement. -- Last edit: 2011-10-20 21:13:16 |

Interesting findings, according to : http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/806430.pdf Sidemarker lamps or reflectors became mandatory on vehicles over 80 inches wide on 1/1/68. Passenger cars and light trucks were required to have them starting 1/1/69. All Vehicles were required to have both lights and reflectors starting 1/1/70. So I guess that is how Jeep got away with it. And even more interesting is the list of vehicles without Sidemarkers (and it applies to this page as well see 1968 Fairlane: -- Last edit: 2011-10-20 21:44:13 |

Quite interesting. But a quick check of the 1968 Ford Fairlane, Mercury Comet and AMC Rambler American brochures seem to show all models with side marker lamps or reflectors (wrap-around parking lamps in the case of the Fairlane). -- Last edit: 2011-10-20 23:03:40 |

like it said "some sources" which may have meant that there was no listing in the bulb catalog, who knows. But the 1969 thing does explain some things though (like Jeep for instance) |

Don't forget some of the European cars has indicator that goes around the side of the front fender such as 1969-73 SAAB 95/96 and 1968/69 Volkswagen Sedan 'Beetles' combines the sidemarker and the front indicator lights as well as 1968 Ford full size and 1968/69 Ford Fairlane/Torino has. ![]() |
